On the morning of Day 8, I told Vinsel that I wanted to hunt with the rifle the whole day. Due to the extraordinary amount of rain they had experienced earlier in the year in Namibia, the bow hunting had slowed down at my water hole the last few days. I stated that I wanted to go after a Springbok and a Gemsbok (Oryx) if possible. The Springbok is very simlar to the north American antelope, while the Gemsbok is unlike any animal I have seen before.

I asked my PH, Wentzel if there were any blinds that were off the ground. He said there was an old one that we could use, but it needed to be repaired with new canvas. Years ago a previous owner had constructed an elevated blind near a river bed that was known to be a leopard corridor.

Before Wade Nolan left for South Africa I promised him that I would have Zebra pictures to show him when I returned to Indiana. Day seven was about trying to get on a Hartman Zebra (also known as the mountain zebra). But I had no idea they could be this dangerous!

The 2009 ATA Trade Show in Indianapolis was another huge success! There were a lot of worries with the sluggish economy as to whether the attendance numbers would remain strong, but when the event opened up on Thursday morning, January 8, people were lined up in mass and excitement filled the Convention Center lobby. “Walk up” numbers the first day included 435 dealers, buyers and distributors. These numbers were those who hadn’t pre-registered.

Its mid-January here in Indiana and the temperatures are at the lowest they have been in ten years. The last days of archery deer season are a couple of weeks behind us now and it will be a long nine months before the opportunity comes to sit once again in a tree stand. So it’s a great time to stay inside and think about next season and plan right? Shed antlers will be hitting the ground in a few weeks but besides that and possibly some great scouting opportunities there really isn’t much else that can be done… or is there?
