While serving in the U.S. Air Force and stationed in northern Michigan in the 1980’s, Roger received his first recurve bow. The bow was offered as a trade by a student he was teaching to fly, he agreed. At the time of receiving the recurve he didn't realize just how much of a blessing the trade would turn out to be. That bow is long gone now, but his passion for archery has not dwindled.
His love of the outdoors and passion for archery has driven Roger to routinely hunt big game in the backcountry of Colorado with not much more than his bow and backpack. "I love getting into the backcountry chasing elk and there's no easier way than with a backpack."
As a former Pastor, it was a natural fit for Roger to accept the position as the director of an outdoor/hunting ministry - High Country Ministries - reaching out to youth and adults alike with hunts, seminars and retreats. The parallels of archery and life provide wonderful insights for daily life and our service to Christ. Sharing "how-to" information with others lead him to create his own website, www.BackcountryBowhunting.com, which has proven to be a valuable asset to eastern, western hunters and target archers alike. Roger's desire to increase his shooting skills for hunting season lead him to becoming involved in shooting state and national target archery tournaments. His greatest archery accomplishment has been becoming the 2006 Colorado State Spring Indoor Champion which led to an overall ranking of 3rd in Colorado.
Roger can be found speaking regularly at Bass Pro Shops, Sportsman's Warehouses, Christian Bowhunters of America chapters teaching seminars on proper shooting form and giving out advice on proven hunting secrets and techniques. He can also be found speaking a men's retreats and wild game banquets around the nation. He is a published author contributing the chapter on Backcountry Bowhunting for Jay Houston's book, Elk Hunting 201 as well as Inside Archery (Dec 06), Bowhunt America (Jan 07) magazines and the new outdoor magazine - The Ultimate Pursuit. He can also be found working with churches to establish outdoor ministry and outreach programs.
Roger also serves on ProStaff for Ross Archery, InnerLoc Broadheads, God's Country Camo, Winners Choice Custom Bowstrings, Bohning Archery, Spot-Hogg, Carter Enterprises, Gold Tip, Wilderness Athlete and In God's Country. He also serves as a board member of Colorado State Archery Association and an elder in his home church, The Gathering, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
